The Sheldon and Susan Siegel Children’s Foundation is committed to providing assistance to children with diabetes and other health issues and to raising awareness about these health problems among the general public.
Type 1 diabetes is also referred to as juvenile diabetes and is most commonly diagnosed in children and young teens. In most cases, children with Type 1 diabetes must take insulin on a regular basis to regulate their blood sugar levels. This can prevent dangerous levels of glucose from building up in the blood and causing issues with major systems within the body. Most children diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes will be on an insulin regimen for the rest of their lives. Our Florida children’s charity is committed to finding better ways to treat these serious conditions.
Risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes include obesity, inactivity and certain genetic predispositions. This form of diabetes is sometimes referred to as adult-onset diabetes. People of all ages, however, can be affected by Type 2 diabetes. For mild cases, diet, exercise and regular blood sugar testing can help to keep Type 2 diabetes in check. More severe cases may require insulin injections and oral medications in addition to diet and exercise regimens. Children with Type 2 diabetes need the supervision of a qualified physician to create a healthcare plan suited to their needs.
